A
good team performance led to 20 points against a previously unbeaten side.
If Orpington are one of the better sides in the league, then we should be
too on this evidence.
Orpington somewhat surprisingly elected to field, and it turned out to be a very good toss to lose. However, whether or not 179 was a winning total, it should have been a bigger one. Stan and Cymbals were both dismissed unluckily early on, but Simon and Stretch steadied things nicely, batting well to set up a solid platform for a later assault, with wickets in hand. Unfortunately a total cock-up led to Will being run out, which sparked a collapse. The lower middle order fell away with a succession of poor shots, and only some lusty blows from Feisty in the last couple of overs saved us, but it didn't look like we had enough runs. A great effort by the bowlers, well backed up in the field, won us the match. Tidy bowled a typically tight spell which increased the required run rate so that they had to play risky shots. To be fair, they were never going to shut up shop as it wouldn't matter to them if they gave us points, but that shouldn't detract from our bowling and fielding performance. A brilliant piece of fielding by Ross broke what looked like becoming a match-winning partnership, and another one by George brought the number 11 to the wicket. George's spell, 4-22, was exactly what we needed at that stage of the game. He always looked threatening and only conceded any runs when he dropped short; when he loses the odd bad ball he will be extremely difficult to score off. Anyway, a top effort all round, but it's only one game. Next week we face another unbeaten side, so come on lads, more of the same please.
