The Sibton late late show
Sibton Park continued their winning run at the weekend,
but once again left it to the last ball to do so.
On a typical ‘London pitch’, bumpy but fast outfield and ‘scratchy’
wicket, Sibton won the toss, a moral victory in itself for skipper Tim
Wren in the metaphysical sense, and elected to field.
Tight bowling by both openers made it difficult to score and
in the 4th over Orpington opener Chris Watts found himself stranded after
a direct hit by Nathan Laws run out for 0. Further tight bowling left
Orpington seemingly struggling with 21 off 10 overs but no further wickets.
Orpington’s South African overseas Simon Savides then started to
get moving, with Sibton’s openers now both off, and spinner Nathan
Laws and left arm seamer Chris Heath bowling Orpington quickly accelerated
to 76 from 20 overs with Savides unfortunately being dropped on 11 and
later again on 21. It was only, once again, the introduction of spin twins
Andy Allon and skipper Tim Wren that started to tighten up the run rate
and gradually wickets began to fall after a barrage of boundaries. Andy
Allon soon cleaned up Savides on 61 and then next over Tim Wren dismissing
opener Shedden on 46. Andy Allon then accounted for two other wickets
finishing with 3 for 60 and yet another run out, and Tim Wren with figures
2 for 57, Orpington closing their innings on 209 for 7.
Sibton in reply got off to a good steady start with both Andy
openers, Towse and Allon, settling in nicely, before a mini collapse of
Andy Towse on 15, Steve Hickmott 0, not happy with his dismissal and threatening
not to give the umpire a lift home, and Andy Allon 36, all for 1 further
run to the score leaving Sibton reeling on 59 off 25 overs. The level
headedness of skipper Wren and his vice captain super Steve Hobbs then
built a slow but sure partnership to get The Park back in the game before
Hobbs departed for 24 leaving Sibton needing just under 100 off 14 overs
and shortly after skipper Wren fell for a well worked 56 after mighty
blows from himself and new batsman overseas Dom ’Homo’ Cassell.
Injured before the game, Martin Wren continued with the big hitting with
Sibton needing nearly 10 an over before Cassell departed on 22 and after
two big blows newly promoted Chris Heath for 6.
At the last over Sibton required 8. Some good running and
measured hitting between Martin Wren and debutant Seb Bentley saw Sibton
on a tie at the penultimate ball. A bottom edge after a big swing to cover
and a slight fumble by the fielder saw the batsman scamper through for
the winning single to a raucous cheer from their teammates.
Another win for Sibton, albeit leaving it late, its still a win thanks
to a big team effort.
